Welcome to Our Monthly Mews-Letter (and Words of Woof)

We are very pleased to share that nine sweet adult kitties, recently rescued from a hoarding situation, are ready for loving homes! They are among the 50 cats Cove Animal Rescue took in and cared for thanks to an outpouring of donations and support.

These cats survived horrific conditions; now they deserve peaceful, healthy lives going forward. On June 8, dozens of responders began a rescue mission to remove sick and injured animals from a Glen Cove residence. Among these rescuers were the Nassau County SPCA, Humane Long Island, the Glen Cove Police Department, veterinary teams from Tender Loving Veterinary Clinic, New Hyde Park Animal Hospital, VCA Westbury Animal Hospital, and many other helping hands. As rescue efforts continued over many days, around 160 cats and kittens, plus two dogs, were removed from the deplorable conditions that exist at the property, which has since been condemned.

Since the cats’ arrival at Cove, shelter staff and volunteers worked diligently to provide the care these neglected animals desperately needed. As heartbreaking and difficult as this situation is, we are beyond grateful for the tremendous support from so many. Aside from the Nassau County District Attorney’s office, we are very thankful to our local community for assisting in the enormous task at hand. These kind and generous supporters range from the Glen Cove Mayor’s office, to local organizations like the Glen Cove Rotary Club with their donations of food and litter, to Girl Scout Troop 141 in Glen Head for recently stopping by the shelter to drop off the many items they collected. And to each and every caring individual and organization that donated in person, by phone, or online, we can’t thank you enough!

As we continue the work of spaying/neutering and making sure the other rescues in our care heal, please think about adopting now that some of the cats are ready for placement. If you are unable to adopt a pet at this time, please consider contributing to the animals’ care. As mentioned, there has been an immediate response and kindness in supporting this situation. We deeply appreciate all the donated items and supplies and currently we have sufficient quantities of food, litter, cleaning supplies and such. When Enzo, a Pitbull mix, arrived at Cove Animal Rescue three years ago, he was overweight and anxious. He also suffered from allergies that caused some skin flare ups. These days, Enzo, who is around 12 years old, is slimmer, much less anxious, and even his skin issues are better. Though he did make progress while in Cove’s care, Enzo’s improvement accelerated after his adoption in April.

Brothers John (to Enzo’s right) and George (on Enzo’s left) are responsible for giving Enzo a “new leash” on life as they share in the dog’s “co-parenting” since adopting him. John, who’s been volunteering at Cove for about a year and a half, first became aware of Enzo and eventually formed a bond with him.

According to Diane, Cove’s Co-Director, Enzo had a bit of uncertainty in his life before landing at the shelter. Several years ago, Enzo’s person passed away and he was taken in by the person’s relatives. Unfortunately, the relatives were unable to keep the dog with them. Enzo’s luck slowly began to change after he made his way to Cove.

While it took some time for Enzo to finally find his forever home, according to his adopters, he is now living “the good life." John says, “He has a nice backyard where he just loves to run. He’s very affectionate and his past anxiety barely exists since he’s in a home.” Reportedly, Enzo also enjoys a bit of TV watching, and yes, some quality time on the couch.

Though we love and care for all of our animals while they are with us at the shelter, we are always thrilled and so grateful when they find permanent, loving homes, as Enzo did. If you are thinking about opening your heart and home to a homeless animal, please “adopt, don’t shop.” If you aren’t able to adopt right now, you might consider fostering. Earlier this month we bid farewell to Rita, a devoted staff member who worked at Cove for the past 10 years. As a caregiver to our cat residents over the years, it’s no wonder many of the parting gifts Rita received were feline-themed. A colorful bouquet and equally colorful, beautifully decorated cupcakes rounded out the party.

“They did a great job,” Rita says, referring to her coworkers, Diane and Kathy, who organized the event, adding that the attention to detail was “impressive.”

Rita plans to return to the shelter as a volunteer. “It’s bittersweet not working there any longer, but I can still visit the animals which I will enjoy,” she says. We wish Rita all the best in her new ventures and look forward to seeing her on her volunteer days!

Spending time with the cats, meeting a zany bunch of fellow animal lovers who have become close friends, participating in fundraising events, adoption events, Cove garage sales, Sea Cliff Mini-Mart, witnessing the generosity of local people who donate their time and treasures to Cove’s cause; the saving, loving, maintaining, and caring for dogs and cats who will go on to live in forever homes.

As sad as it can be to watch our furry ‘children’ leave us to live new lives, we are thrilled when we know we’ve found the perfect match for each cat or dog. As soon as the door closes on those adoptions, an endless stream of new kittens, cats and dogs enter and steal our hearts, and the process begins again.
